Since 2004, Auroville Institute of Applied Technology-College (AIAT) is offering vocational education to the youth of the bioregion.

Education to be complete must have five principal aspects corresponding to the five principal activities of the human being; the physical, the vital, the mental, the psychic and the spiritual.

About

AIAT was founded in 2004 with the financial aid of the German Government and numerous private donors in Germany. Its purpose is to empower rural youth with skills to earn a decent livelihood. It operates as a non-profit unit of the Auroville Foundation. Since 2009, AIAT has conducted Central Government-recognized 1-2 years of industrial training programmes under a Dual System of Training (DST) in collaboration with ten regional companies. Since 2022, AIAT has been affiliated with Pondicherry University as a College of Applied Sciences offering a three-year Bachelor in Vocation (B.Voc) degree courses in emerging technologies."

Infrastructure

AIAT’s two campuses offer a nurturing and inspiring environment for learning, experimentation, and creativity, which leaves a lasting impression on anyone who visits. The proximity of the campuses—just 1.8 kilometers apart—allows them to complement each other while specializing in different areas of education and training.

At the Irumbai campus, the focus is primarily on academic programmes related to Computer Science, and Electronics and Electrical Engineering. This campus emphasizes developing theoretical knowledge and practical skills in these domains. The presence of advanced equipment and resources, including a fibre-optic internet connection, facilitates cutting-edge research and hands-on learning. Students here work on real-world projects, giving them the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in practical scenarios.

In contrast, the Palmyra campus centers around Manufacturing and Production training. This campus fosters a more hands-on, technical approach, equipping students with practical skills in industrial processes. The workshops and labs are designed to simulate real manufacturing environments, preparing students for careers in production-related industries.
