Sustainable Development

Sustainability in Auroville is a natural outcome of the spiritual vision of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother that looks at Nature as the manifest form of the divine. The transformational praxis of integral yoga places self-discovery as a necessary condition for the harmonious development of self, society and environment. Upon this foundation is the conception of Auroville as a self-supporting city for 50,000 people within a radius of 2.5 km.

Over the years, Auroville has won international acclaim for its efforts in sustainable development practices that are unfolding in the context of the individual and collective transformation of consciousness. It is at once material, economic and psychological with a spiritual foundation.
